I feel that every decade has a song to empower women after a painful break-up. We had Aretha Franklin spell out R.E.S.P.E.C.T., Gloria Gaynor belting out I Will Survive, and Linda Ronstadt pointing out that You’re No Good. To me, Rolling in the Deep sits on that pedestal of songs telling girls that its okay to tell your manipulative man to fuzz off! I’m not telling every girl to adopt any attitude, but I simply believe girls just need a song to help them stand up, point up your index finger, wiggle it left and right, and go ‘Uh-uh’ or ‘Nuh-uh’. Ghetto-ness optional.
Rolling in the Deep happens to be today’s equivalent of RESPECT. Though, the plot of the song is different, its the energy that the song possesses as it builds up from the intro, right to the end of the song; an important trait that most of today’s songs lack. Creating a balance for the lyrics to even out the melody is a big challenge, but it looks like Adele’s channeled that with top-notch perfection. Rolling in the Deep is haunting and powerful and much like Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, every woman should have this song in their playlists.
Gentlemen, if you’d like to get in on the action, John Legend’s got that covered.
*PS I realize that Rolling in the Deep was actually launched last year. I’m late, but who gives a fuzz.
